As the capital and largest city of French Polynesia, Tahiti and its capital city of Pape’ete are not quite as idyllic and peaceful as you might imagine, but the island is filled with world-class resorts and it’s also a more interesting place than you might have guessed. French is the official language, but nearly everyone you meet as a visitor will speak English as well.

The nearby island of Moorea is more beautiful, and the stunning island of Bora Bora is a short flight away, so Tahiti isn’t the final stop for most romantic and honeymoon visitors coming into the area. Hotels and resorts here are very expensive by any standards, so you don’t want to just turn up hoping to find a decent deal. Many resorts are a bit on the older side as well, so read those reviews if you are trying to book a trip of a lifetime.
The general high season for Tahiti runs from May 1st to October 31st while the low season is from November 1st to April 3oth.

Locally grown and made food, including abundant and fresh baguettes, can actually be reasonably priced in Tahiti and the other islands. But most things need to be imported from great distances, so it should be no surprise that restaurant meals tend to be very expensive. There are a few bargains around, including the food carts along the waterfront each evening. Alcohol is also quite expensive, except for the local lager and some imported wines.

Tahiti is one of the most well known island destinations for many reasons, one being its near perfect weather. Throughout the year, Tahiti has an average temperature of 79 degrees, providing a great climate for outdoor adventures followed by relaxation. In addition, you’ll find a near constant breeze flowing from the water.
Summer in Tahiti is from November to April and then winter is from May to October. No matter what time you visit, it’s best to pack light clothing and lots of bathing suits.
