Officially called San Carlos de Bariloche but almost always referred to just as “Bariloche,” this mountain city near the Chilean border is very popular as a tourist destination for both locals and foreigners. Not unlike Queenstown, New Zealand, this city is a ski resort in winter (June through August) and a crowded outdoor and water sports center in summer.

Hotel and hostel prices tend to be reasonable here for how nice the place is, but you might expect them to be cheaper based on the struggles that the Argentine economy continues to have. Food and drinks can be good bargains by most standards, especially for those who take the time to seek out the happy hours and deals. Adventure activities tend to be pricey though, so don’t expect a glamorous ski holiday on a tight budget.
Wintertime sees a slight price increase as many people visit to take their turns on the ski slopes. If you’re looking for lower prices and can do without the snow, summer would be your best bet.

Weather in Bariloche can be a bit unpredictable with temperature drops and sudden snow. The higher up you travel into the mountains, the more likely you are to run into sudden weather changes.
During the summer you’ll find it short and dry with January and February holding the titles of the warmest months of the year. Daily temperatures tend to average in the 70s with lows that sometimes drop into the 40s at night. One thing that is important to note is that even though it is summer, snow still finds its way on the top of the mountain peaks.
Winters are known for being long and cold with temperatures hovering between the 40s and 20s. The coldest months of winter include June, July and August. Because of this, it’s best to plan for constant low temperatures and pack warm clothing year round.
